    Description

Here is a really nice classic locality specimen of native silver ore composed of native silver and cobalt arsenides (mostly cobaltite and safflorite) growing through a calcite-dolomite-diabase matrix we acquired from an old Canadian collection awhile back (this piece comes from an old rockhound who lived and worked in Cobalt in the 1970s and 80s and is now in his mid 70s and I have been purchasing parts of his old collection over the past five years as he decides to let stuff go).
This is a quality cabinet sized piece rich in native silver and cobalt ore minerals.  The silver is often enveloped by growths of safflorite and cobaltite.  This is an end cut piece, meaning it came from a larger piece that was slabbed and this was the last slab.  It is cut on one side and nicely polished, and left natural on all the other sides.
This piece comes from the old Langis Mine (also known as the Casey-Seneca Mine), Casey Township, Cobalt Area, Cobalt-Gowganda Region, Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada.   The Langis Mine was originally worked from 1906 to 1966.  Most silver ore from the Cobalt region grew at the core of large arsenide "rosettes" as you can see in this piece.  This piece from the Langis Mine was taken from the Penna Shaft, which was a shaft driven from 1988 to 1990 to intersect the original, mile-deep Langis shaft.   So we know for certain this piece came out sometime between 1988 and 1990!
So this is basically a 1.8 cm thick end-cut slab that has been cut from a much larger ore vein section with one large side cut flat and polished to show the rich internal native silver and cobalt mineralizations, and the sides and bottom are left natural.  It is large enough that you could still cut it further into at least 2 thinner slabs if desired.  It measures 7.2 x 4.0 x 1.8 cm in size (about 2.9 x 1.6 x 0.75 inches), weighs 3.0 ounces, and it comes professionally labeled and ready for immediate display!   This is a cool specimen but also could be further slabbed and used to cut into cabochons for jewelry or used in artwork if desired.
Per Wikipedia:  The Cobalt Silver Rush started in 1903 when huge veins of silver were discovered by workers on the T&NO railroad near Mile Post 103. By 1905 the rush was underway and the town of Cobalt sprang up to service the mining efforts.  By 1908 the mines around Cobalt produced 9% of the world's silver, and in 1911 alone produced more than 31 million ounces of silver.  However, the good ore ran out fairly rapidly, and most of the mines were closed by the 1930s.  Several of these mines were reopened for short periods of time during World War II and in the 1950's, but all mining activity ceased more than 50 years ago.  Over the history of mining in the Cobalt area, more than 460 million ounces of silver came out of these mines.
