Description
Here is another recent work of yours truly and my new Kingsley North 6" cabbing machine! This is a nice hard to find locality specimen of native silver ore composed of native silver and cobalt arsenides (mostly cobaltite and safflorite) growing through a dark gray-green diabase matrix we acquired from a Canadian collector friend awhile back in a trade. This is a quality cabinet sized piece that is quite rich in native silver, and its been polished up on the one large cut side so that the silver is very easy to see! The silver and cobaltite is growing in large spreading blooms across the cut and polished face and the veins wrap around the sides as well. This is a thick end slab that runs up to 1.2 cm in thickness of rich silver and cobalt ore that came to me cut on one side just like this, and I polished up the cut side by hand with my new Kingsley North cabbing machine sometime in the past two months.
This piece comes from the old Hargrave Mine that was in operation from 1908 until closing in 1928 in Coleman Township, Cobalt Area, Cobalt-Gowganda Region, Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada.
So this is basically a thick combo silver/cobalt ore chunk that has been cut from a larger ore vein section with one large side cut flat and hand polished to show the rich internal native silver and cobalt mineralizations, and the other sides all left natural. It measures 6.6 x 3.2 x 1.2 cm in size (about 2.5 x 1.25 x 0.5 inches), weighs 1.74 ounces, and it comes professionally labeled and ready for immediate display! This is a cool specimen but it also could be used to cut several cabochons for jewelry or used in artwork if desired.
Per Wikipedia: The Cobalt Silver Rush started in 1903 when huge veins of silver were discovered by workers on the T&NO railroad near Mile Post 103. By 1905 the rush was underway and the town of Cobalt sprang up to service the mining efforts. By 1908 the mines around Cobalt produced 9% of the world's silver, and in 1911 alone produced more than 31 million ounces of silver. However, the good ore ran out fairly rapidly, and most of the mines were closed by the 1930s. Several of these mines were reopened for short periods of time during World War II and in the 1950's, but all mining activity ceased more than 50 years ago. Over the history of mining in the Cobalt area, more than 460 million ounces of silver came out of these mines.
