At one time, there was more native iron associated with this specimen. A small amount of black mineral remains mixed in with the lustrous gold. Some is now rusted and in this altered state changed by the effects of water and oxygen. This rock is packed with gold and siliceous material, most of it in the form of quartz. There is probably calcite here as well. The exposures of golden precious metal crystals are stunning in their brilliance and purity. This is an outstanding specimen. My source says it's from the goldfields of California.
For those who've kept track of my store these past several years, you'll know I don't sell low-grade specimens because if it shows gold, it can't be low grade ore.

Iron oxidizes, breaks down and, when it does, traces are left behind. Leave some construction rebar out in the elements and see how quickly it starts to rust and disintegrate. Where is once was, there will remain in the earth an ever-expanding halo of rust.

I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but I never found a piece with visible gold.
Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz. This specimen comes from one of the many gold-bearing vein systems of California, The Golden State.

Since the beginning of this enterprise,
I viewed my experiences 'chasing color' in our western U.S.
and Canadian (B.C.) provinces as extremely advantageous.
