Fair-Good overall antique cond: This absolutely beautiful & extremely ornate, late 19th-early 20th c Japanese blk lacquered, gold gilt dec, fig papier mache hanging wall pocket, is in fairly well pres overall cond, less some loss of material at the very tip of the right hip on the back flange of the wall pocket & over the wall mounting hole. The form is made from pressed & sized papier mache & then painted w/blk lacquer & gilding. The dec surfaces are lush & heavily populated w/multiple figs in various stations & performing a variety of activities. These include conversing in what appears to be an imperial palace, w/perhaps the Emperor & his queen w/their children, seen strolling about on verandas w/robes & parasols. On the back flange behind the slanted, open pocket, can be seen gold gilt illustrated artisans painting laid out scrolls on the floor & in front of a stretched canvas in a frame. Incredibly ornate & heavily decorated w/accomplished figuration. Very fine. Extraordinary.
