BRIEF HISTORY
: The British pre-decimal halfpenny coin was minted between 1672-1967 and since 1860, in Bronze.  The British
decimal halfpenny
coin was introduced in February 1971 to 1984.  The 1971 halfpenny is known for its frequent Double-Die Obverse coins.  The halfpenny featured two different designs on its reverse during its years in circulation.  From 1672 until 1936, the image of
Britannia
appeared on the reverse. From 1937 onwards, the image of the
Golden Hind
appeared.  Like all British coinage, all halfpennies bore the portrait of the monarch on the obverse.

The
1957, 1962
(both the 57 & 62 had about 40 million halfpennies minted),
1964, 1966 & 1967
all have Elizabeth II on the obverse.
The
1971, 1973, 1974, 1976 & 1979
are all known as decimal halfpennies minted after a 4 year gap where the Crown was considering getting rid of the halfpenny.
Finally, in 1984 the halfpenny was phased out permanently making it truly a collector’s gem.
