    Description

Here is a beautiful large thumbnail to small miniature sized specimen loaded with native silver and cobaltite with minor included cream/pink colored calcite-dolomite matrix with the silver growing large spreading blooms.
This is an 8 mm thick nugget that has been cut flat on one large side to show the native silver inside the piece, and the silver patterning was such that I just had to polish it up.  So the top and sides of this specimen have been highly polished so the silver crystallization's just POP, and the bottom is natural!  It has rich native silver growing completely through the slab from front to back and the metallic material you see here is split roughly 30% silver and 70% cobaltite/safflorite (take a good look at the closeup photos and you will see what I mean).
This piece comes from the old Siscoe Mine, also known as the O'Brien and the Miller Lake O'Brien Mine in Nicol  Township, Cobalt Area, Cobalt-Gowganda Region, Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada.  It measures 3.4 x 1.7 x 0.8 cm in size
    ,
weighs 14.75 grams, and comes professionally labeled and ready for immediate display!
According to the Mindat web site, the current name of this mine is the Siscoe Mine and "
Also known as the Miller Lake O'Brien Mine, or simply the O'Brien Mine. It is a silver-cobalt mine discovered in 1908, acquired by the Miller Lake Co. in 1909 and then Siscoe Mines Limited in 1945. The workings had reached a depth of 1300 feet by 1962 (as reported in "Precambrian" magazine June 1962 issue).  Total production up to 1965 was 36,830,000 oz. Ag and 786,000 lbs Co."  It should be noted that there is also an O'Brien Mine in Coleman Township that is also in the Cobalt area.
Per Wikipedia:  The Cobalt Silver Rush started in 1903 when huge veins of silver were discovered by workers on the T&NO railroad near Mile Post 103.
By 1905 the rush was underway and the town of Cobalt sprang up to service the mining efforts.  By 1908 the mines around Cobalt produced 9% of the world's silver, and in 1911 alone produced more than 31 million ounces of silver.  However, the good ore ran out fairly rapidly, and most of the mines were closed by the 1930s.  Several of these mines were reopened for short periods of time during World War II and in the 1950's and 1960's, but all mining activity ceased for good more than 40 years ago.  Over the history of mining in the Cobalt area, more than 460 million ounces of silver came out of these mines
