Description
About 2 years ago I acquired a large group of what are nearly pure crystals of silver that came out of the Sunshine Mine, Big Creek near Kellogg in Shoshone County, Idaho. The Sunshine mine closed back around 1982, and these silver crystals had come from Medallion Consultants in Kellogg. The silver came with a written certificate of authenticity from Medallion that said the crystals came from the Sunshine Mine and came from the result of the final refining process in the mill. The mine used stainless steel cathodes to remove the silver from solution through electrolysis, the silver crystals formed on the cathodes, were scraped off, washed, and sold to medallion. These crystals assay at an amazing 999.5 parts silver per thousand (.9995 fine silver!). A photo of this document is the last photo if you want to read it.The Medallion certificate is dated 6/22/84 and these had been sitting in the safe of the local gold and coin shop where a friend of mine found them and turned me on to their existence (Rose Hill Gold and Coin in Boise, he's buddies with the owner). This was a small plastic jar of several ounces of these silver crystals, and Medallion back in the day used the crystals in necklaces, sun catchers and other items that they sold to the public. The Sunshine Mine also had annual sets of .999 fine silver coins minted that they sold to the public as bullion collectables. I have a few of these silver bullion sets from back when the mine was still in operation in the early 1980s in my personal collection. Well, Medallion Consultants Inc. was the company that minted the .999 fine silver coin sets for the Sunshine Mining Company as well. Pretty cool historic mining artifacts in my mind, especially since its been nearly 40 years now since this grand old mine closed down operations and these crystals were grown on the refinery's stainless steel cathodes!
So here is a beautiful group of twenty-two (22, I think, they are hard to count in the case) of these cathode produced .9995 silver crystals from the final refining process at the old Sunshine Mine Mill that were originally acquired by Medallion Consultants Inc. of Kellogg Idaho back in the early 1980s for use in making coins and other merchandise, and that were ultimately never used, wound up at the Rose Hill Gold and Coin shop here in Boise, and that I got when a friend alerted me that they were there and the owner wanted them out of his safe!
This set of 22 silver crystals run between about 3 and 6 mm in maximum size each (and they average between 4 and 5 mm), and they come professionally labeled and mounted together in a 1 x 1 x 7/8 inch clear, foam filled plastic gemstone case and ready for immediate display and review. The weight of the case and silver is 4.74 grams and the weight of the silver crystals alone is a bit over 1.0 gram.
These silver crystals are exquisite with every imaginable crystal form present. You will need magnification to really unlock their full beauty, but these are a micromounters dream. They are simply stunning under a hand lens!
Silver was discovered in the Coeur d'Alene District of Idaho in 1884 and major production began in the 1890's. Over 1.2 billion ounces of silver came out of this area of Shoshone County since 1884. During the early 1900's, Idaho and Utah were the great silver-lead producing states, accounting for over 40 percent of the country's total output during the period 1907-30, with most of Idaho's output coming from the Coeur d'Alene District. The historic mining town of Wallace (population 960 today) is nestled in the center of northern Idaho's beautiful Silver Valley and has long been famous as the
world's largest silver producer for the past 100 years, making it the richest mining town still in existence, and the last town entirely listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
The Coeur d'Alene District is the only location in the world that produced over a billion ounces of silver since 1884.
