    Description

Here is a rich silver ore specimen composed of a 7 mm thick vein section slab of rich silver and cobalt ore that is really a metallic vein section of near solid native silver, cobaltite, safflorite and other arsenides with rich veins of bright native silver growing through the cobaltite/sulfides and taking up roughly 10% of the interior of the vein section on the piece by volume.  This piece is all metallic ore and mostly cobaltite, there is no calcite/dolomite of other matrix on this piece, its all cobaltite and silver.  This is a slab cut from a much larger piece and both large sides have been cut flat but not polished to show the internal ore composition while the outer edges have been left natural.
So taking a close look at this piece, all the really bright silver-white areas you see in the photos are native silver veins running through a primarily cobaltite and safflorite ore section, so all the bright stuff is silver and all the darker gray stuff is primarily cobaltite, safflorite and other arsenides!
It comes from the famous Frontier Mine, South Lorrain Township, Cobalt-Gowganda Region, Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada.   This is a large cabinet sized specimen that is a slab cut on the top and bottom but not polished and 7 mm thick.  Overall it measures 11.7 x 5.0 x 0.7 cm in size (about 4.75 x 2.0 x 0.25 inches), it weighs 5.7 ounces, and it comes professionally labeled and ready for immediate display!   This is a nice classic locality native silver and cobalt ore specimen, but it could also be cut into numerous cabochons and used in lapidary for jewelry if desired (but I like it just as it is as a specimen!).
According to the MINDAT web site:  The Keeley and Frontier mines were two mines on the opposite ends of the same vein system that eventually connected underground. The Keeley Mine was discovered in 1907 and the Frontier mine in 1921.  The two mines finally connected on the Keeley 6th level in 1962 and were worked to a depth of 1,455 feet.  The mine(s) closed for good in 1965 after producing some 19,200,000 ounces of silver; 3,300,000 pounds of cobalt, 27,000 lbs. of nickel and 10,000 pounds of copper.
