    Description

Here is a really cool specimen composed of a 7 to 8 mm thick bonanza grade vein section slab of rich silver and cobalt ore growing through a light colored dolomite-calcite matrix.  There is a lot going on with this piece and it deserves a good long look under a hand lens to unlock all this piece has to offer.  This is a slab cut from a much larger piece and both large sides and two edges have been cut flat, but not polished to show the internal ore composition while the other edges have been left natural.
So taking a close look at this piece, all the really bright silver-white areas you see in the photos are native silver with silver-gray cobaltite and safflorite running through a primarily light colored calcite-dolomite matrix.  But there is very little calcite-dolomite left, nearly the entire thing is silver and cobaltite/safflorite.  All the bright nearly silver-white stuff in the photos is silver and all the light to darker  silver-gray stuff is primarily cobaltite and safflorite, and all the white to light cream, pink and cream-gray is calcite and/or dolomite!  I would estimate this piece is composed of roughly 15% calcite-dolomite, 30% native silver and 55% cobaltite/safflorite.  We know that silver is roughly 3.87 times as heavy as calcite, 1.6 times as heavy as cobaltite and safflorite, and 3.6 times as heavy as dolomite.  So we can figure the rough silver content in this piece using these volume percentages and weight per cubic centimeter differences and our old high school algebra!
So if the percentage breakdown by volume above is correct, the specimen would contain roughly 44% of its weight in silver.  The total specimen weighs in at 10.3 ounces, meaning there would be roughly 4.5 ounces of silver in this specimen.  But lets just say "around 4" ounces as a realistic estimate.  Its bonanza grade for sure.  That equates to over 14,000 ounces of silver per ton of the original ore!  Yeah that is definitely "Bonanza Grade" ore!
So as I write this listing silver is selling for .05 an ounce, meaning this specimen currently has somewhere around 7 of native silver in the piece.  Again, its bonanza grade silver ore!  This piece was cut from a 50 pound section of ore from the famous Woods Vein at the Frontier Mine, South Lorrain Township, Cobalt-Gowganda Region, Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada.
This is a large cabinet sized specimen that is a slab cut on the top and bottom and two thin edges and 7 to 8 mm thick so overall it measures 13.3 x 8.2 x 0.8 cm in size (about 5.25 x 3.25 x 0.3 inches), it weighs 10.3 ounces, and it comes professionally labeled and ready for immediate display!   This is a super sweet classic locality super rich native silver and cobalt ore specimen, but it could also be cut into numerous cabochons and used for jewelry or art work if desired (but I like it just as it is as a specimen!).
According to the MINDAT web site:  The Keeley and Frontier mines were two mines on the opposite ends of the same vein system that eventually connected underground. The Keeley Mine was discovered in 1907 and the Frontier mine in 1921.  The two mines finally connected on the Keeley 6th level in 1962 and were worked to a depth of 1,455 feet.  The mine(s) closed for good in 1965 after producing some 19,200,000 ounces of silver; 3,300,000 pounds of cobalt, 27,000 lbs. of nickel and 10,000 pounds of copper.
